Krishan's Stone

Standing alone on moorland southwest of Sheffield, this weathered gritstone boulder carries one of Yorkshire's most intriguing mysteries. Carved into the rock face are symbols and lettering that have puzzled historians for decades - some claiming they're medieval boundary markers, others suggesting much older origins.

The stone itself isn't spectacular to look at, but the walk to reach it makes for a decent afternoon out. History buffs will spend ages trying to decipher the worn inscriptions, while families might find the kids lose interest fairly quickly once they've clambered over it a few times.

Getting there requires a proper walk across rough ground - no car park or clear path leads directly to it. The surrounding moorland can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip from the nearest road.

The views back towards Sheffield's sprawling suburbs provide an interesting contrast to the wild landscape. Just don't expect crowds or facilities - part of its appeal is the splendid isolation.
