Broadstones Reservoir

Tucked away in the hills northwest of Sheffield, this working reservoir makes for a proper peaceful escape from the Peak District crowds. The water stretches out in a long, narrow strip between rolling moorland - nothing fancy, just clean lines and open sky.

Walkers will get the most from Broadstones. A decent footpath runs along the western shore, giving you lovely views across the water to the opposite hills. The terrain's fairly gentle, so families with older children shouldn't struggle, though younger ones might find the walk a bit long. Birdwatchers often stop here - the quiet water attracts various waterfowl, particularly during migration seasons.

What strikes you most is the silence. No visitor centres or car parks full of coaches here, just a functional bit of Yorkshire countryside doing its job. The surrounding moorland feels wild enough to clear your head properly.

This works well as a morning walk if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like Ingfield Farm or Thurlmoor Farm. It's not a destination that'll fill your whole day, but that's rather the point. Sometimes you need somewhere that simply lets you breathe without trying too hard to entertain you. Worth the short drive from your holiday base for an hour or two of genuine quiet.
