Horn Hill

Standing at 420 metres, this modest peak delivers proper Pennine views without the slog of the higher fells. The climb from Holmfirth isn't particularly taxing - a steady uphill walk through farmland and moorland that takes about an hour each way. Once you're up there, the panorama stretches across the Holme Valley and beyond to the Dark Peak edges.

Walkers will appreciate the well-defined paths, though they can get muddy after rain. Families with older children should manage fine, but it's not pushchair territory and toddlers might find the distance a bit much. The summit itself is fairly unremarkable - just open moorland really - but it's the journey and views that make it worthwhile.

Go on a clear day if you can. The weather can change quickly up here, so pack layers even in summer. There's no facilities or entrance fee - it's just open countryside. Allow three hours return from Holmfirth centre, including time to admire the scenery.
