Knavenhill Wood

Ancient oak and ash trees stretch overhead as you step into this woodland sanctuary just outside Warwick. Knavenhill Wood is the sort of place that reminds you why Britain's forests have inspired centuries of folklore - thick canopy, dappled light, and paths that seem to meander with no particular hurry to get anywhere.

Walking here feels properly restorative. The main tracks are well-maintained enough for families with pushchairs, though the more interesting routes branch off into narrower trails that wind between moss-covered logs and through clearings where wild garlic carpets the ground in spring. Children will love the natural playground of fallen trees and hidden hollows.

Birdwatchers do particularly well here - the mix of mature woodland and newer growth attracts everything from woodpeckers to nuthatches. Early morning visits reward you with the most activity, plus you'll likely have the place largely to yourself.

Access appears to be free, which makes it a brilliant addition to any Warwickshire holiday. The wood sits conveniently close to several holiday parks including Monks' Barn Farm and Newlands Caravan Park, making it an easy day trip for families staying in the area. Allow a couple of hours if you want to explore properly, though you could easily spend longer if the weather's decent and you've brought a picnic.
