Kinharvie Hill

The walk up Kinharvie Hill is straightforward enough, though calling it a peak might be generous - it's more of a proper lumpy outcrop that rises 300-odd metres above the Dumfries landscape. What makes it worth the effort is the view back towards the town and across the rolling farmland of Dumfries & Galloway. On a clear day you can see for miles, and that's when it feels worthwhile.

It's a walker's spot rather than a destination for lingering. Most people knock it out in under an hour, which suits families with younger kids - they won't get restless halfway up. The path itself is reasonably well-trodden, though it gets boggy in places after rain, so proper boots matter. There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, so bring water and snacks.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks near Dumfries - Landis Farm and Criffel View are closest at under three miles - this works as a morning outing before heading elsewhere. It's the sort of thing you do because you're in the area, not because you'd drive specially from Edinburgh or Glasgow. Caerlaverock Castle Corner Camp Site is another five miles away if you want a slightly more ambitious day combining a castle visit with the hill walk.

Go early if you can. The light is better, fewer people are about, and you'll have the top more or less to yourself. Worth doing once, but don't expect to spend the whole day here.
