Ghost Stane

Standing stones don't come much more atmospheric than this solitary sentinel on the hills above Dumfries. The Ghost Stane earns its eerie name honestly - this ancient granite monolith cuts a lonely figure against the Galloway sky, weathered by centuries into an almost spectral presence.

History buffs will appreciate the mystery surrounding its origins. Nobody knows exactly who erected this prehistoric marker or why, though theories range from Bronze Age burial sites to territorial boundaries. The stone itself stands about two metres tall, rough-hewn and imposing despite its modest size.

Families with older children who enjoy a decent walk will find the approach rewarding. It's a proper hike across moorland from the nearest road, so come prepared with decent boots and waterproofs - this is Scotland after all. The views back towards the Solway Firth make the effort worthwhile, particularly on clear days when you can see across to the Lake District.

Expect to have the place largely to yourself. Unlike some of Scotland's more famous stone circles, the Ghost Stane sees few visitors, which only adds to its brooding appeal. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip from Dumfries, though photography enthusiasts might want longer to capture the right light. The stone works well with several nearby holiday parks including Marthrown of Mabie and Criffel View, making it an easy addition to a Galloway touring holiday.
