Craigbill Hill won't trouble serious peak-baggers - it's more of a gentle afternoon stretch than a proper mountain challenge - but the 360-degree views across the Solway Firth and rolling Galloway countryside make the easy climb well worth your time.

Families with older children will manage the ascent without drama, though toddlers might find the rougher ground near the top a bit much. The path from the base is fairly obvious, winding through gorse and bracken before opening onto the summit's grassy plateau. Allow about two hours return if you're taking it steady.

What strikes you most is how quickly you escape Dumfries' suburban sprawl. Within minutes you're surrounded by proper countryside, with buzzards wheeling overhead and the Solway stretching toward the Lake District fells on clear days. It's particularly lovely in late afternoon when the light catches the water.

Perfect for breaking up a longer stay at one of the nearby holiday parks. Marthrown of Mabie sits barely a mile away, while several other sites including Criffel View and Beeswing are within easy reach.
