Craigend Hill

Dumfries looms below you from this modest summit that rewards the effort with proper panoramic views across the Solway Firth. The climb up Craigend Hill isn't particularly challenging - it's more of a decent walk than a proper hike - but the payoff at the top makes it well worth the hour or so it takes to reach the summit.

Families with older kids will manage this one fine, though toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections near the top. The views stretch right across to the Lake District on a clear day, with the Solway coastline spread out like a map below. It's the sort of spot where you'll want to pack a flask and spend a bit of time taking it all in.

Best tackled in decent weather when visibility is good - there's not much point hauling yourself up here on a grey, misty day when you can't see past your own feet. Early morning or late afternoon light shows off the landscape at its best.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Marthrown of Mabie or Beeswing Caravan Park, this makes for a cracking half-day adventure. The hill sits conveniently close to Dumfries, so you can easily combine it with a trip into town for supplies or a proper meal afterwards.
