Woodhead Hill

Standing at 432 metres, this modest peak offers surprisingly good views across the Solway Firth without the leg-burning climb you'd expect from proper mountains. The walk up from the nearest parking spot takes about 45 minutes through mixed woodland and open moorland - pleasant enough, though the path can get boggy after rain. From the summit, you'll see across to the Lake District fells on a clear day, with Dumfries spread out below looking rather more appealing from this distance.

Families with older children will manage it fine, but it's probably too much for little ones who'll lose interest halfway up. The real payoff comes for anyone staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Marthrown of Mabie or Landal Barnsoul - it makes for a proper morning's walk that earns you lunch. Keen walkers might find it a bit tame, honestly, but as a gentle introduction to Scottish hill walking or a leg-stretcher during a Dumfries & Galloway break, it does the job well enough. Best tackled on a dry day when the views actually materialise.
