Houghton Hall Park

The walk into Houghton Hall Park from Dunstable side rewards you with proper countryside - grassland that rolls gently through what feels like proper Chilterns, even though you're only a few minutes' drive from town. It's a nature reserve, so don't expect manicured gardens or visitor facilities. What you get instead is space to move, decent views across the farmland, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Buckinghamshire in the first place.

Most of the circuit takes about an hour, depending on your pace and whether you stop to actually look at things. Walkers will find it straightforward - no scrambling, just good paths. Birdwatchers and anyone interested in wildflowers should time it right; spring and early summer are when it properly comes alive. Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes, to be honest. It's not the sort of place with viewpoints or dramatic features. It's gentle.

The practical stuff: as far as I can tell it's free and open to the public, though I'd check locally before you head out. The nearest proper base for a camping holiday would be Merlin Farm near Whipsnade Zoo - that's only 3.3 miles away and gets excellent reviews. If you're after something quieter, Hill Farm And Orchard is worth considering at 6.1 miles. Houghton Hall works well as a morning walk before heading to the zoo or combining it with the broader Chilterns walks in the area. It's a solid half-day activity, not a destination in itself.
