Horton St Michael’s Church

The church sits alone on high moorland between Leek and Rudyard, commanding views across the Staffordshire hills. St Michael's is small, austere, and genuinely atmospheric - built from dark stone with a squat tower that looks like it's been there for centuries. Which it more or less has, though the exact age is hazy; the churchyard tells you more than any plaque, with graves dating back generations of local families.

This isn't a destination in itself. Rather, it's the sort of place you stumble across on a proper moorland walk and suddenly understand why people settled here. The interior is plain and functional - high box pews, limited decoration, the kind of cold that gets into your bones in winter. History buffs will find it quietly interesting; casual visitors might spend fifteen minutes and move on.

The real reason to visit is the walk. Rudyard Vale Caravan Park is less than a mile away, making this an easy detour if you're based there or at Sky View just over the hill. The moorland around Leek is excellent for rambling, and St Michael's works as a natural waypoint rather than a destination. Allow an hour to find it, have a look, and understand the landscape.

Access is straightforward from Leek - it's signposted from the main roads heading towards Rudyard. The churchyard is always accessible. Go on a clear day if you want the views to pay off; on a grey afternoon, it's pure atmosphere.
