Horseclose Wood

The woodland around Horseclose, just outside Kendal, is proper fell country - dense conifer plantations mixed with broadleaf trees that open up into decent walking terrain. It's the sort of place locals know about rather than tourists, which means you'll have the paths mostly to yourself, especially midweek.

What you get here is straightforward: miles of marked trails winding through mixed forest, with views out towards the surrounding fells if you pick the right routes. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, brilliant for walking when the higher peaks are waterlogged. On a clear day you can push higher and break out above the treeline for proper panoramic stuff.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not dramatic or Instagram-ready, but it's reliable and well-maintained. Families with kids aged eight and up will manage the gentler trails; younger ones might find the terrain a bit relentless after an hour or so. Serious hikers often use it as a warm-up or recovery walk between bigger Lake District days.

Admission is free and there's no formal opening hours - it's open access fell land essentially. Allow two to four hours depending on which route you pick. The nearest proper base is staying at Castlerigg Hall or Keswick Camping, both within striking distance. Combine it with time in Kendal itself and you've got a solid day sorted. Worth doing once if you're in the Lakes, but don't expect it to be the highlight of your trip.
