Grayrigg Common

The walk up Grayrigg Common from Kendal is one of those straightforward fell outings that rewards you without demanding much in return. It's a proper fell, not a tourist trap, and you'll rarely find crowds even on weekends. The summit sits at 353 metres, so it's hardly Alpine, but the views south towards the Howgill Fells and east across the Lune Valley justify the climb. Allow a couple of hours for the whole loop if you're not rushing.

What makes Grayrigg work is that it feels genuinely wild despite being barely three miles from town. The paths are clear enough, the terrain straightforward moorland, and there's something about being on actual open fell that makes the effort feel worthwhile. Families with reasonably fit kids will have no bother here. The kind of place where a dog gets a proper run and everyone arrives back in time for an early dinner.

This is walking country rather than sightseeing, so come expecting to move rather than stand around taking photographs. The peak itself is unremarkable - moorland, nothing built on it, nothing dramatic - but that's partly the appeal. Weather matters more than it does at lower elevations, so choose a clear day if you can.

If you're staying at Two Acre Glamping Pods just down the road, Grayrigg makes a cracking morning or afternoon walk to warm up before tackling something bigger in the Lakes proper. It's the sort of fell locals know and visitors overlook, which is exactly as it should be.
