Hodsock Priory

The ruins of Hodsock Priory sit quietly on the outskirts of Worksop, a medieval Augustinian foundation that's been slowly returning to the earth for centuries. What remains are fragments of stonework and earthworks scattered across the site - enough to give you a sense of what stood here, though you'll need to use your imagination more than a bit. There's an atmospheric quality to wandering the grounds, particularly if you catch it on an overcast afternoon when the Nottinghamshire sky hangs grey and heavy overhead.

This is one for history enthusiasts rather than casual visitors seeking dramatic ruins. Children might find it underwhelming after twenty minutes or so - there's no visitor centre, no interpretive panels, just the bones of a building left to speak for itself. The walk round is manageable and flat, so it suits all ages, but you're essentially looking at lumps of old stone in a field. Worth the detour if you're already in the area, less compelling as a standalone trip.

The site is free to access and takes roughly an hour if you're properly exploring. Timing-wise, spring and early summer are nicest when the grass is maintained and the light is better for photographs. Given its proximity to Worksop, it pairs well with a stay at one of the nearby parks - Riverside Caravan Park is closest at just over four miles away, whilst Clumber Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite sits at five and a half miles and offers far more facilities if you need them. You could easily visit Hodsock as part of a broader Nottinghamshire heritage circuit without adding much to your journey.
