High Rigg SE Top

The walk up High Rigg from Keswick is short, sharp, and absolutely worth doing - especially if fell walking intimidates you. You're looking at about forty minutes to the summit, gaining barely 300 metres, which means even reluctant walkers usually make it without complaint. The views from the top are proper excellent: Catbells across the way, Skiddaw looming north, and Derwentwater spread out below like someone's spilt a giant mirror across the valley. On a clear day you can see right across to the Helvellyn range.

It's the sort of fell that works brilliantly for families staying at Threlkeld Hall or Ewe Love Camping Pods - close enough to the caravan parks that you're not burning half the day getting there and back, but high enough to feel like you've actually achieved something. The paths are decent underfoot, though it gets a bit boggy on the eastern side after rain. Allow two hours return if you're not rushing and fancy a sit-down at the top. Winter can be murky and claustrophobic up here, so spring through to October is your window.

What makes it different from the bigger summits is the isolation. You won't be jostling for position with a hundred other hikers. It's genuinely peaceful, which is rare this close to Keswick. The descent is straightforward enough that you won't be cursing your knees by the bottom. Troutbeck Head is a bit further afield but still workable as a base if you're planning multiple walks.
