High Force activity station

The Tees Valley's most dramatic waterfall gets its own visitor hub near Bishop Auckland, and it's genuinely worth the stop if you're camping in the area. High Force thunders down a 21-metre drop - proper impressive in spate, though less theatrical after a dry spell. The activity station sits right by the car park, so you're not trudging miles to reach it.

Inside, it's interpretive stuff about the river, the geology, and what lives in and around the falls. Nothing flashy, but it does the job of explaining why this gorge matters. The real draw is stepping outside: the riverside walk down to the waterfall itself takes about ten minutes and beats any exhibition. The rocks are slippery when wet, so trainers with grip are essential.

Families with primary-age kids will get a solid hour out of it - there's enough to poke around, and the waterfall itself is the kind of thing that genuinely impresses small people. Teenagers might find it a bit tame unless they're into geology or nature photography. Walkers should definitely include it on a longer Pennine route; the Pennine Way runs nearby.

Staying at Leekworth or Mickleton Mill puts you within striking distance for an afternoon visit. Check conditions before you go - the falls look best after rain, but the paths become treacherous. Summer weekends draw crowds, so arrive early if you want to avoid the day-trippers. Admission details are thin on the ground, but it's worth ringing ahead.
