Hewcroft Hill

Standing at 390 metres above sea level, this modest fell offers proper views across Teesdale without the crowds you'll find on the bigger Yorkshire Dales peaks. The walk up from Barnard Castle takes about forty minutes through farmland and heather moorland - nothing too taxing, though it's steep enough in places to get your heart rate up.

From the summit, you can see right across to Raby Castle on clear days, with the River Tees snaking through the valley below. It's not dramatic in the way of Pen-y-ghent or Helvellyn, but there's something satisfying about having a whole hilltop to yourself on a Tuesday afternoon.

Walkers will get the most from Hewcroft Hill, particularly those staying at one of the many caravan parks dotted around Barnard Castle. Hill Top Huts and Doe Park Caravan Park are both within easy reach, making this a decent leg-stretcher if you're based locally. Families with older children should manage it fine, though toddlers might find the final approach a bit much.

Give yourself two hours for the round trip, and pick a clear day if you want those long views across County Durham. It's free, naturally, and the paths are reasonably well-marked once you find the starting point near the castle.
