Coal Flat Hill

Standing at 435 metres, this unassuming County Durham summit offers proper fell walking without the Lake District crowds. Coal Flat Hill sits just south-west of Barnard Castle and provides a decent workout for anyone staying at the local caravan parks scattered around Teesdale.

The views from the top stretch across the Yorkshire Dales and back towards Durham's rolling countryside. It's not spectacular - don't expect Instagram-worthy panoramas - but there's something satisfying about earning your vistas through honest leg work. The walking is straightforward rather than technical, making it suitable for reasonably fit families with older children.

Most people tackle it as part of a longer circular route from Barnard Castle, though you can drive closer if you know the minor roads. Allow three to four hours for a proper walk that takes in the surrounding moorland. The terrain can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential.

For those based at Hill Top Huts or Doe Park Caravan Park, it's practically on your doorstep. The hill works well as a morning expedition before exploring Barnard Castle's medieval ruins in the afternoon. Not a headline attraction, but a solid option for walkers who prefer their peaks without gift shops at the bottom.
