Colley Hill

From the summit, you get proper views across Teesdale's rolling countryside - though on cloudy days you might find yourself wondering if the climb was worth it. The peak sits between Barnard Castle and the wilder parts of County Durham, making it a decent leg-stretcher if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks.

Walkers will appreciate the relatively straightforward ascent, though it's nothing spectacular by North Pennines standards. Families with older children should manage it fine, but toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections. The lack of facilities means bringing your own refreshments is essential.

Timing matters here. Morning visits often reward you with clearer views before the afternoon haze sets in, and autumn brings the best colours across the dale. Winter can be properly bleak, with muddy paths that'll test your walking boots.

For those staying at Hill Top Huts or the other caravan sites dotted around Barnard Castle, it makes a reasonable half-day outing combined with exploring the castle itself. Allow two to three hours for the round trip if you're taking it steady. The hill won't win any prizes for drama, but it's a solid choice for stretching your legs without venturing too far from your base.
