Hampsfell Hospice

The climb up to Hampsfell Hospice from Grange-over-Sands is steep but manageable, and the tower itself - a sturdy stone structure sitting at 727 feet - rewards you with views across Morecambe Bay that stretch for miles. It's not a casual stroll, mind. You're looking at a proper walk up from town, though the paths are well-trodden and the gradient, while unrelenting in places, sorts itself out once you're halfway up.

This is a walkers' destination first and foremost. The hospice itself is small - a cylindrical tower built in the 1840s to mark the summit - and you won't linger for hours inside, but that's not really the point. What keeps people coming back is the walk itself and the moment you reach the top. On a clear day you can see right across to the Lake District fells, and on days when the light hits properly, it's genuinely rather lovely. The bay spreads out below like something from a postcard your grandparents would've sent.

Families with older kids will get more from it than toddlers - this isn't a five-minute attraction. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're taking it steady. The nearest caravan parks are within a few miles: Meathop Fell is closest at 2.5 miles, making this a proper half-day outing during a Lakeland holiday. It's the sort of thing that earns its place on an itinerary not because it's spectacular on its own, but because the effort of getting there makes the view feel properly earned.
