About Grove Gill Rigg

The walk up Grove Gill Rigg isn't particularly long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel your legs on the way down. This North Yorkshire peak sits just inland from Skipton, tucked into moorland that rolls on for miles in every direction once you reach the top. The fell itself is modest by Pennine standards - nothing dramatic, nothing that'll make your jaw drop - but that's rather the point. It's the kind of walk locals do on a Saturday afternoon when they can't be bothered with the busier peaks further north.

You get proper views across Wharfedale from the summit, and on a clear day you can pick out the bigger fells in the distance. The approach winds through farmland before climbing up heather and grassland, which means walkers with decent fitness should manage it in under two hours round trip. There's an old wall to follow for much of it, which helps with navigation when the cloud rolls in - and it will.

This is genuinely walkers' territory rather than a family stroll. Kids will find it dull unless they're already keen on fell-walking. Visit in autumn when the heather's flowering, or winter when the views are clearest. Summer brings the midges, which is reason enough to wait.

Stay at Wharfedale Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Wood Nook just outside Skipton, and you've got a solid day's walking sorted before heading back for a proper tea. Free to walk, naturally. Bring a map though - phone signal's patchy up there.
