Grimwith Fell

The walk up Grimwith Fell from Skipton is one of those Yorkshire outings that rewards effort without demanding a mountaineer's fitness. The fell itself isn't dramatic - it's moorland rather than crag - but the views across Wharfedale make the trudge worthwhile, especially on a clear day when you can see for miles across the dales.

It's a straightforward hike from the lower slopes, taking the best part of two hours depending on pace and how many stops you make. The terrain is moorland grass and stone paths, nothing technical but it gets a bit boggy after rain. Bring decent boots. The summit sits at just over 300 metres, so it's not a lung-busting effort, which makes it ideal for families who want a proper walk without the kids complaining the entire way up.

Historians might be less gripped - there's no ruin or old site to justify lingering at the top. Go for the walk itself, the views, and the fresh air. On a weekday afternoon you'll likely have it mostly to yourself.

Camping nearby works perfectly. Wharfedale Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, Breaks Fold Farm, and Wood Nook are all within striking distance of Skipton, which is the obvious base town. Do Grimwith as a half-day outing, explore Skipton proper in the afternoon. The fell's free to access - just turn up and walk. Avoid weekends if solitude matters to you.
