Greenhaw Hill

The walk up Greenhaw Hill near Skipton isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you feel like you've earned the views at the top. On a clear day you can see across the Yorkshire Dales properly - rolling moorland stretching out in every direction, with the towns of Skipton and Ilkley visible in the distance. It's the kind of spot where you stand at the summit and understand why people move to this part of the world.

This is pure walker territory. Not a tourist attraction with a café or visitor centre, just a decent fell walk that'll take most people two hours there and back from the road. The path is well-trodden but can be muddy after rain, so proper boots are worth the bother. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might struggle with the gradient.

What makes Greenhaw Hill work as part of a wider park holiday is its position in the Dales landscape. You're close enough to Howgill Lodge, Bolton Abbey Estate Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, and Wharfedale Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite that you could easily combine it with other walks or visits to the Abbey itself. It's the sort of hill that slots into a proper outdoor holiday rather than a standalone day trip.

Go early morning if you can. The light's better, the paths quieter, and you'll have the views to yourself for at least part of the walk. It's free, obviously - it's a hill.
