Grassholme Reservoir

Grassholme Reservoir sits in the rolling countryside south of Barnard Castle, a proper slice of North Pennine landscape that rewards a detour if you're already exploring the area. It's a working water supply - not a visitor attraction in the traditional sense - but the reservoir itself is genuinely striking, especially on clear days when the water reflects the surrounding moorland. The walk around it offers decent views without being strenuous, and you'll see why the Victorians chose this spot to dam the Baldersdale valley.

Who gets the most from it? Walkers and photography types, mainly. If you've got kids hoping for a splash about or a cafe, you'll be disappointed - this is about landscape and a bit of peace and quiet. The nearest accessible point is from the road near Mickleton Mill Caravan Park, which is barely a mile away, or you can walk up from Baldersdale itself. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing any kind of circuit; it's not a quick tick-box visit.

Timing matters. Early morning or late afternoon light transforms the place, and weekdays are quieter than weekends. Barnard Castle itself - about five miles north - is worth combining with this, as you can string together a decent day walking between the reservoir and the riverside town without feeling like you're rushing.

It's free access, though you'll need your own transport to reach it properly. Not life-changing, but on a good day in County Durham, it's absolutely worth the drive.
