Millstone Grits

Standing at 516 metres, this craggy outcrop offers some of the finest views across Teesdale without the crowds that mob the more famous fells. The name gives it away - you'll spot the distinctive millstone grit formations that make this peak a proper little scramble rather than a gentle stroll. From the top, the panorama sweeps across the Yorkshire Dales on clear days, with Barnard Castle visible in the valley below.

Walkers with a bit of experience will get the most from this one. The terrain can be rough underfoot, and while it's not technically difficult, you'll need decent boots and a head for heights in places. Families with older children who enjoy a challenge will find it rewarding, but toddlers would struggle.

Allow three to four hours for a proper walk, including time to appreciate the views and perhaps explore the surrounding moorland. Early morning visits often reward you with better visibility before the valley mist rolls in.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks around Barnard Castle like Mickleton Mill or Leekworth, this makes an excellent day out. The drive to the starting point takes you through some lovely Teesdale countryside, and you could easily combine it with a visit to Barnard Castle itself on the way back.
