Peatbrig Hill

Standing at 449 metres, this modest summit offers surprisingly good views across the Durham Dales without the crowds you'll find on better-known peaks. The walk up from the nearest road isn't particularly taxing - about 45 minutes of steady going through rough pasture and moorland.

What makes Peatbrig Hill worth the effort is the sense of proper solitude. You're unlikely to bump into other walkers here, which means you can actually hear the curlews and enjoy the peace. The views take in the Tees Valley towards Barnard Castle and stretch across to the Yorkshire Dales on a clear day.

Hikers who enjoy bagging lesser-known summits will appreciate this one. Families with younger children might find it a bit of a slog, though teenagers who don't mind a proper walk should cope fine. The terrain can be boggy in places, so decent boots are essential.

From the holiday parks around Barnard Castle - including The Old Armoury Campsite and Doe Park Caravan Park - it's an easy drive to the starting point. Allow half a day if you want to take your time and perhaps combine it with a visit to Barnard Castle itself. Best avoided in poor weather when the summit disappears into cloud.
