Gaerwen

Stone circles don't get much quieter than this one. Gaerwen's Bronze Age remains sit in open farmland on Anglesey, just a short drive from Caernarfon, consisting of a small circle of standing stones that most visitors walk past without noticing. The site lacks the drama of Stonehenge or even the better-known circles in the Lake District, but that's rather the point.

Archaeology enthusiasts will appreciate the authenticity - no visitor centre, no crowds, just you and stones that have stood here for over 3,000 years. The setting is properly rural, with views across to Snowdonia on clear days. Families might find it underwhelming unless the kids are particularly keen on ancient history.

Expect to spend about twenty minutes here unless you're sketching or photographing. The stones are accessible year-round and there's no admission fee, though parking can be limited along the nearby road. It's the sort of place that works well as a brief stop while exploring Anglesey rather than a destination in itself.

Staying at one of the holiday parks near Caernarfon puts you within easy reach - Bryn Gloch or Glan Gwna are both under three miles away. Combined with a trip to Caernarfon Castle or the beaches of Anglesey, it adds a touch of prehistoric Wales to your itinerary without demanding much time.
