Gypsy Wood Park

Walk into Gypsy Wood and you've left the Caernarfon bustle behind entirely. This nature reserve sits just outside town and feels properly remote, all woodland paths winding through native Welsh trees with the occasional glimpse of the Menai Strait if you know where to look. The trails are well-trodden but not rammed, which makes it ideal for families who want their kids burning off energy without fighting crowds.

What you get is straightforward: a few miles of walking routes through mixed woodland, mostly flat or gently rolling terrain. The paths are manageable for young legs and pushchairs, though after rain it does get muddy. Birds are the main draw here - bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. Walkers will get an hour's decent ramble in, maybe two if you potter about. Cyclists occasionally use the trails too.

It's free to access, and there's a car park at the entrance which saves messing about. No facilities to speak of - no café or visitor centre - so bring water and snacks. Weekday mornings are quieter than weekends, obviously.

For a holiday based at one of the nearby parks like Glan Gwna or Coed Helen, this works as a straightforward leg-stretch rather than a full day's outing. Combine it with a walk into Caernarfon itself or a drive up to Snowdonia proper if you want something more ambitious. It's the sort of place you'll do once and enjoy, but won't find yourself coming back to repeatedly.
