Fort Hill

The views from Fort Hill are genuinely worth the climb. This Iron Age hillfort sits above Newtownards with enough elevation to give you proper panoramic vistas across the Ards Peninsula and beyond - the kind of outlook that would've made sense for an ancient lookout post.

What you're actually looking at are the earthwork remains of a fort that's been here for something like 2,000 years. The defensive ditches and ramparts are still readable in the landscape, which is more than can be said for some archaeological sites that have been levelled flat. It's not going to take hours - reckon twenty minutes walking the perimeter and soaking up the history - but it's the sort of place that rewards pausing to think about who lived here and why they chose this exact spot.

Walkers will get the most from it. The approach is straightforward enough from Newtownards, though there's a proper climb involved and the ground can be boggy depending on weather. History enthusiasts will appreciate seeing Iron Age defensive planning made tangible. It's less thrilling for small children unless they're genuinely into ancient forts - the real draw is the landscape and the thinking space rather than any on-site attractions.

If you're based at Dunroamin Caravan Park in Millisle, it's less than six miles away - perfectly doable as a morning outing before heading elsewhere in the peninsula. Free to visit, no gates or restrictions that I'm aware of. Best tackled on a clear day when those views actually justify the walk up.
