Foel Fawr

The walk up Foel Fawr rewards you with proper views across the Llŷn Peninsula - the kind that make you understand why people come to Gwynedd in the first place. It's not a monster of a peak by North Wales standards, but the scramble to the summit has real character, and on a clear day you're looking out towards Snowdonia and the Irish Sea all at once.

The actual climb takes about ninety minutes from the car park, depending on your pace and how many times you stop to catch your breath. It's steep enough to feel like proper work, but nothing technical - just good moorland walking with decent boots. The summit itself is a bit bare, nothing fancy, but the views from up there make the effort worthwhile.

This one suits hill walkers more than casual strollers. Families with older kids will manage it fine if they're used to being outdoors. Expect to spend three hours all in, including time at the top. The weather can turn quickly, so check the forecast before you head out - these Welsh hills aren't forgiving when the mist rolls in.

If you're staying at one of the local parks - Tal-y-Fan is barely a mile away, or Gimblet Rock if you fancy somewhere slightly further out - this makes an excellent half-day walk. Pwllheli is your nearest proper town for supplies and the sort of tea you'll want after getting back down. It's the kind of walk that won't make your trip, but you'll genuinely regret missing it if the weather's decent.
