Erglodd Roman Fort

Walking across the windswept fields near Borth, you'll stumble upon what remains of one of Wales' most remote Roman military outposts. Erglodd is essentially a grassed-over earthwork now - don't expect dramatic stonework or reconstructed gates. What you're looking at are the subtle bumps and ditches that once formed the fort's defences, built around 80 AD as Rome pushed deeper into Wales.

The site itself is modest. You can make out the rectangular layout if you know what you're looking for, and the views across Cardigan Bay and toward the Cambrian Mountains compensate for the lack of visible structures. There's something rather affecting about standing where Roman soldiers once stood, even if there's precious little to actually see.

Historically minded walkers will get the most from this - you need patience and a decent guidebook or local knowledge to read the landscape properly. Families might find it a bit underwhelming unless the kids are already keen on archaeology. The nearest proper accommodation is at Cambrian Coast Holiday Park, just under 3 miles away, or Searivers Caravan Park a touch further, making it doable as a morning's walk from a base on the coast.

Free to visit and open year-round. Allow an hour including the walk in and a proper look around. The approach is cross-country, so go in dry conditions - muddy fields don't help you appreciate Roman engineering.
