Earl's Hill Camp

The Iron Age hillfort crowning Earl's Hill, just outside Shrewsbury, is one of those sites that rewards the scramble more than the destination itself. You're looking at earthwork defences - ditches and banks that once enclosed a settlement around 2,000 years ago - spread across the hilltop with views across the Shropshire landscape that genuinely justify the walk.

It's not a reconstructed fort with costumed guards or interpretive boards explaining every ditch. What you get instead is the chance to stand where people once lived and defended their homes, to trace the ramparts with your feet and work out the geography yourself. That's either brilliant or a bit underwhelming, depending on what you're after.

Archaeology types and serious walkers will get the most from it. Families with younger kids might find the walk more interesting than the site itself - allow an hour round trip from the car park, maybe longer if you're stopping to admire the views. There's no visitor centre or facilities, so bring water.

Free to visit and accessible year-round, it slots nicely into a Shropshire holiday if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Eastridge Glamping or Spring Lea, both within two miles. Pair it with other walks in the area rather than treating it as a standalone attraction. The real payoff is the walk and the landscape, not the archaeology.
