Pontesford Hill

Standing at 386 metres, this modest summit offers surprisingly expansive views across the Shropshire plains without the slog of a proper mountain hike. The walk up takes about 45 minutes from the village car park - steep enough to get the heart pumping but manageable for most reasonably fit folk.

From the top, you'll spot the distinctive outline of the Wrekin to the northeast and on clear days, the Welsh hills shimmer in the distance. It's a proper workout for keen walkers, though families with older children will manage fine. Younger kids might find the final stretch a bit much.

The hill sits just a few miles southwest of Shrewsbury, making it an excellent day out from any of the nearby holiday parks. Spring Lea Holiday Park is only 1.6 miles away, while Stoney Acres Luxury Holiday Park at 4.2 miles offers a slightly more upmarket base for exploring the area.

Go early morning or late afternoon for the best light - the summit can get busy with local dog walkers at weekends. There's no entry fee, obviously, and you're looking at two to three hours total including time to admire the view and catch your breath. Pack layers - it's always windier up top than you'd expect.
