Eagle Mountain

The walk up Eagle Mountain rewards you with proper views across the Mourne Mountains and down toward Newry. It's not the tallest peak in the range - that honour goes to Slieve Donard - but it punches well above its weight for accessibility and the payoff when you reach the summit.

The ascent is straightforward enough, taking most people between 45 minutes and an hour depending on fitness. The path is well-trodden and reasonably clear, though it gets boggy in places after rain. On a clear day you can see right across to the Irish Sea, which makes the effort worthwhile. Weather moves in fast here, so check conditions before heading out - I've seen the view vanish into cloud in minutes.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not technical climbing, just proper hill walking with decent scenery. Young kids might find it a bit of a slog, though determined families with teenagers absolutely do it. If you're staying at one of the glamping spots nearby - Oakwood or Greenview are both excellent and barely twenty minutes' drive away - it makes sense as a morning walk before lunch.

There's no charge and no facilities on the mountain itself, so bring water and something to eat. Allow three hours if you're taking your time, stopping for photos, and having a break at the top. It's free access, which is refreshing, and genuinely worth the detour if you're spending time exploring the Mourne Mountains proper.
