Dowrog Common

Dowrog Common is a proper stretch of open moorland just outside Haverfordwest, the kind of place where you can actually breathe. It's not dramatic or showy - there's no visitor centre, no café, no crowds - just heathland that rolls gently across West Wales with views that open up as you walk. The vegetation is low scrub and bracken, and if you time it right in late summer, the heather blooms purple across the whole thing.

Walkers get the most from this. It's the sort of spot where you can spend forty minutes or three hours depending on your mood and fitness. There's something satisfying about walking on common land - you're not following a prescribed route, just moving across open ground. It's free to access, naturally, and there are no operating hours to worry about either.

For a camping holiday at Pembrokeshire Meadows or any of the sites clustered within two miles, Dowrog Common works as a proper break from beach days. Kids under ten might find it a bit dull unless they're into spotting wildlife or scrambling through heather, but teenagers and adults who like solitude will rate it. The light changes beautifully across the moorland in late afternoon, and on a clear day you get genuine distance views. Come in spring when the gorse is yellow, or autumn when the colours shift. Avoid it when it's raining sideways - it gets wet and windswept.
