Darfar

Darfar is a modest limestone landmark in the rolling hills near Hulme End, deep in Staffordshire's Peak District fringe. It's the sort of place that doesn't announce itself loudly - you'll find it marked on OS maps but not splashed across tourism boards. The walk to it is the real draw: a straightforward ramble through proper countryside that rewards you with decent views across the moorland.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a dramatic peak or a viewpoint that takes your breath away, but it's a solid waypoint on a longer circular walk, and the surrounding area offers plenty of decent paths if you're staying at one of the local campsites. Bank House Farm or Hartington Hills are both within striking distance if you're basing yourself for a week. The landscape itself - open moorland, stone walls, that particular shade of grey-green that defines the High Peak - is what makes it worthwhile.

Historically inclined visitors might find some interest in the geological aspect (it's limestone country through and through), but Darfar isn't a ruin or a monument with plaques and visitor facilities. It's a marker on the map, a landmark to aim for on a day out. Allow an hour or two depending on where you're coming from and how many other walks you want to stack around it.

Go if you're already walking the area. Don't make a special trip from elsewhere just for this. The real appeal is the excuse it gives you to spend a morning in decent moorland scenery.
