Wetton Mill

The River Manifold runs past Wetton Mill in a quiet corner of the Derbyshire Peak District, and this old watermill is one of those spots that rewards the effort it takes to find it. You're looking at a traditional stone-built mill that once ground corn for local farmers - it's a working reminder of what mattered in these valleys before mechanisation changed everything. The mill itself stands right by the water, and the setting is genuinely lovely: steep valley sides, trees close in, and that particular sense of isolation you only get in proper limestone country.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination you can reach by car - you need to either walk from Hulme End or arrive from one of the footpaths that cross the Manifold Valley. Most people combine it with a proper ramble along the river, which is the real draw. The walk itself is straightforward enough, though the valley sides can be steep in places. You're talking a couple of hours minimum if you want to make a proper day of it.

If you're camped at Bank House Farm or Hartington Hills - both within a couple of miles - this becomes a natural half-day excursion. The mill isn't a major attraction that'll keep you occupied for hours, but it's worth the detour as part of a broader exploration of the valley. Go for the walk and the landscape, not expecting a full visitor experience. The Manifold Valley itself is the real star; the mill is just a legitimate excuse to be there.
