Nan Tor Cave

Scrambling up through limestone outcrops near Hulme End, you'll find this natural cave tucked into the hillside - though calling it a cave might be generous. More accurately, it's a decent-sized rock shelter formed by weathering of the local limestone, offering just enough depth to duck inside and escape a Peak District downpour.

Walkers and families with older kids will appreciate the short but steep climb to reach it. The approach involves picking your way through rough terrain, so proper walking boots are essential. Once there, the shelter provides lovely views across the surrounding countryside, making it a worthwhile stopping point rather than a destination in itself.

Expect to spend about 30 minutes exploring the immediate area - there's not much to see beyond the cave mouth and the surrounding rock formations. It's completely free to visit, naturally, though you'll need to park sensibly in Hulme End and walk up.

This works well as part of a longer walking route if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like Bank House Farm or Hartington Hills. The cave sits nicely on circular walks that take in other limestone features of this part of the White Peak. Just don't expect Wookey Hole - it's more of a geological curiosity than a proper cave system.
