Manifold Valley

The Manifold Valley runs through some of Derbyshire's most dramatic limestone country, threading between steep wooded banks near Hulme End. It's a walkers' paradise rather than a drive-through attraction - you're here to get your boots on and actually explore the landscape, not queue at a visitor centre.

The valley floor follows the River Manifold as it winds through narrow gorges, with paths ranging from gentle riverside strolls to proper hillside climbs that'll test your knees. The stone is pale and dramatic, the trees squeeze right down to the water's edge, and in spring the whole thing feels far more remote than it is. Serious hikers will want to tackle the longer routes; families with younger kids can manage the easier stretches without too much fuss, though pushchairs are frankly a non-starter here.

There's nothing to 'do' in the attractions sense - no admission fees, no cafes, no facilities to speak of. It's entirely free, and that's rather the point. Spring and early autumn are best; summer gets busy with the walking crowd, and winter can be muddy and slippery on the steeper bits.

Stay at one of the nearby campsites - Hartington Hills and Bank House Farm Campsite are both within a few miles - and you've got yourself a proper base for exploring the valley and the wider Peak District hills. It works best if you're already planning serious walking holidays in the area. Day-trippers expecting dramatic views without effort will find it underwhelming.
