Danes Dyke Beach

The earthwork running along Danes Dyke Beach near Bridlington is genuinely odd - a massive defensive bank that cuts right across the headland between the North Sea and Flamborough Head. You're looking at something built around 500 AD by Anglo-Saxon settlers keen to protect their settlement from raiders, and walking alongside it now, you can still feel the scale of the effort involved.

It's less 'attraction' and more 'walk with a bit of history attached'. The dyke itself is the draw - a proper rampart of earth that's survived 1,500 years of weather battering. On a clear day the coastal path offers decent views across the bay towards Bridlington, and the beach below gives you access to rockpools and the sort of golden sand that makes kids happy for hours. The walk is straightforward enough for families, though it gets windy up there.

If you're camping at Haven Thornwick Bay or Flamborough Glamping, it's basically on your doorstep - a 20-minute walk worth doing once. The Bridlington Caravan and Motorhome Club site is even closer, just a mile away. Allow an hour for a proper exploration rather than rushing through.

Truthfully, it's not a destination in itself. But if you're based locally for a week and want to understand what shaped this corner of Yorkshire, or you need a half-decent walk that breaks up caravan life, it does the job. The engineering is impressive once you know what you're looking at.
