Sewerby Beach

The stretch of sand at Sewerby, just north of Bridlington, is one of those Yorkshire beaches that rewards an early start and low tide. It's got that genuine seaside feel - proper pebbles mixed with sand, rock pools worth investigating, and the kind of space you can actually spread out without bumping elbows with half of Leeds.

What makes it work is the backdrop. Sewerby Head looms above the beach, all white chalk cliffs and a working lighthouse perched on top. It's dramatic without being showy, and the coastal path that runs along the clifftop gives you options depending on your energy levels. Walkers will want to tackle the full loop; families with younger kids might just potter about on the beach itself.

The real draw here is quietness. Unlike Bridlington's main seafront a mile or so down, this feels removed from the amusement arcades and candyfloss stalls. You get proper nature - grassland cliffs, seabirds, the works. Low tide opens up loads of beach; high tide can squeeze things a bit, so timing matters.

It's free to access and works brilliantly as a morning or afternoon stop during a caravan holiday at any of the sites nearby - the Bridlington Caravan and Motorhome Club is barely over a mile away, making it effortless. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you've got time; it's not the sort of place you'll want to rush. The coastal path also links you to Flamborough Head if you're feeling ambitious.
