The Houlton Gallery

The Houlton Gallery sits just off Bridlington's main drag, a proper little art space that punches above its weight. It's the kind of place you stumble into expecting twenty minutes and somehow lose an afternoon - local artwork, rotating exhibitions, the sort of thing that catches you off guard with how good it actually is.

The gallery works best for people who like discovering what locals are actually making rather than trudging round a museum's greatest hits. You'll find paintings, sculpture, sometimes ceramics - the mix changes, which means it's worth checking what's on before you go. It's intimate enough that you won't feel herded about, and honest enough that you're not paying theme park prices to look at art.

If you're camped at one of the sites nearby - Bridlington Caravan and Motorhome Club is practically on the doorstep, while South Shore and The Old Mill are both under two miles away - it's an ideal half-day activity when the beach gets too windy or the kids need a break from the seaside routine. Haven Thornwick Bay is a bit further out but still within easy reach.

Bring a notebook if you're the type who likes sketching inspiration from what you see. Allow a good hour at minimum, though there's no rush.
