Crotlieve Mountain

The walk up Crotlieve Mountain rewards you with views across the Mourne range that make the slog worthwhile. It's one of those peaks that doesn't look particularly high or dramatic from a distance, but the ascent is properly steep in sections and the summit views justify every wheezing breath.

The route from the Newry side climbs through moorland with the ridge looming ahead. Most people allow two to three hours return depending on fitness. There's no official visitor centre or facilities on the mountain itself - bring water and proper boots because the terrain is rocky and boggy in equal measure. The summit opens up to views across County Down, with Slieve Donard commanding attention to the south.

It's most enjoyable for walkers with some experience rather than casual strollers. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though very young children will find the exposed sections tiresome. Bad weather closes in quickly here, so check conditions before you head out.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Greenview or Oakwood both sit within spitting distance of the mountains - Crotlieve makes a cracking half-day outing. Kilbroney Caravan Park is equally well placed for exploring the wider Mourne foothills. The mountain itself is free to access year-round. Spring and early autumn are best, when the weather's more reliable and the paths aren't waterlogged. Winter brings fog and ice that can make it genuinely treacherous.
