Craggy Wood

Craggy Wood delivers exactly what its name promises - proper craggy terrain where the forest floor gives way to rocky outcrops and streams tumbling between steep banks. It's the kind of place that makes you feel like you've properly left civilization, even though Kendal sits just minutes away.

The woodland here is thick and atmospheric. You'll be navigating between boulders, crossing water, and picking your way along what might generously be called paths. It's not a manicured forest walk - this is something with actual character. The rock formations are the main event, and they reward poking about. Families with older kids (eight or nine upwards) will find it entertaining, though younger ones might struggle with the uneven ground and scrambling. If you're after gentle strolls, go elsewhere.

Historically it's been used for climbing and scrambling for decades, so you'll likely spot bolts and gear left by previous visitors. The wood works brilliantly as part of a wider Windermere exploration - it's close enough to the main lake attractions but feels genuinely remote.

Go early in the day if possible. The place gets muddy after rain, which adds to the adventure if you don't mind it, or makes it annoying if you do. Allow 60-90 minutes for a proper wander rather than a quick dash through. It's free access, which is always welcome.

Stay at Windermere Camping and Caravanning Club Site (1.4 miles away) or Kendal's version (3.9 miles) and use Craggy Wood as a proper legs-stretching break between lake days.
