Coed Dol-goch

The forest sits about four miles south of Dolgellau, a proper working woodland rather than a manicured nature reserve. You get mixed broadleaf and conifer, the kind of place where the light filters through in bands and you actually hear birdsong without background music playing.

It's fundamentally a walking destination. Paths wind through the trees at various grades - nothing that'll have your calves screaming, but enough interest to keep you moving. The understory is thick enough that you feel genuinely away from things, even though the car park is close by. In autumn the canopy turns copper and gold; spring brings the rush of new growth. Winter can be muddy if we've had rain, which in North Wales is basically always.

Families with kids aged six and up will get the most from it. Younger children lose interest once the novelty of "trees" wears off, which is roughly thirty minutes. Walking groups and photography types absolutely belong here - the light work alone is worth the trip if you've got time.

Give yourself two to three hours if you're doing a proper circuit. The forest is free to access, which is the main reason to swing by. Dolgellau itself has cafes and shops if you need sustenance before or after.

Pair it with Gwerniago or Sunbeach if you're camping in the area - both are close enough for an easy morning wander before the day properly starts. It's the kind of place that fills the gaps between bigger attractions rather than being the main event, but that's not a criticism. Sometimes a quiet wood is exactly what you need.
