Cocklakes Ridge

The walk up Cocklakes Ridge rewards you with proper Pennine views across the Yorkshire Dales. It's not a massive peak - we're talking around 1,500 feet - but the vistas from the top stretch for miles once you clear the moorland scrub. Most people tackle it as part of a longer walk rather than a standalone trip, which makes sense given the gradual ascent isn't particularly dramatic on its own.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from this one. The route from Skipton direction is straightforward enough, taking you through decent moorland terrain without serious scrambling. Allow two to three hours return if you're taking it easy, less if you're proper fit. There's something satisfying about moving gradually uphill through open countryside - no crowds, no gift shop waiting at the top, just you and the landscape.

Timing matters here. Spring through early autumn works best; winter can turn the moorland boggy and visibility gets dodgy. The ridge fits well into a broader Dales holiday, sitting comfortably between Skipton town and the larger parks like Bolton Abbey Estate or Coxons Farm Glamping Pods. You're close enough for a half-day expedition without needing to travel far from wherever you're based.

It's not flashy or Instagram-famous, which is partly why it's worth doing. The walk itself is the point - not ticking off a famous peak. If you're after proper fell walking without the Lake District crowds, this delivers exactly that.
