Cock Mountain South-West Top

The walk up Cock Mountain's south-west top is proper rewarding, especially if you're staying at one of the glamping spots round Newry. The peak itself isn't dramatic - you won't get that sharp, knife-edge scramble - but the views across the Mourne Mountains more than make up for it. On a clear day you can see right across to the Irish Sea, and the walk in gets you away from the busier routes that hit the higher summits.

It's a solid choice for families who want something more than a casual stroll but without the real graft of a full mountain day. Allow three hours for most walkers, maybe two if you're moving quickly. The terrain is rough underfoot in places, so proper boots matter - trainers will leave your ankles hating you. Summer and early autumn are best; winter can turn it into a proper slog if the weather turns.

Stay at Greenview Glamping just down the road and you've got yourself a cracking weekend. Wake up, do the walk, then spend the evening round the fire pit. The Rock Caravan and Camping is also nearby if you'd rather pitch a tent. Newry's close enough for supplies and a decent meal afterwards. The whole thing works as part of a longer Mourne Mountains loop - it doesn't dominate your day, so you can pair it with other peaks or just use it as a warm-up for the bigger walks nearby.
