Carneddgwion

The walk up Carneddgwion is a proper hill rather than a mountain, rising just under 350 metres above the Pembrokeshire landscape near Haverfordwest. What makes it worth the effort is the view - you get a real sense of how the valleys and farmland roll out across West Wales, especially on a clear day when you can see across to the Preseli Mountains.

It's the sort of walk that takes a couple of hours round trip depending on your fitness and which route you take. The paths aren't always obvious, so this isn't one for wandering without a map, but that's part of the appeal - you won't stumble over crowds of day-trippers. Walkers and anyone after a modest hill with decent views will find it worthwhile. Families with young kids might struggle unless they're used to rougher ground.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit - just space to sit and take in the countryside. Free to access, though you'll need to sort your own parking depending on where you approach from. Spring and summer are best, though autumn gives good visibility too.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Pencarnan Farm or Rhosson are closest - it makes a brilliant morning or afternoon outing that won't eat into your whole day. Pairs well with exploring the Preseli hills or heading down to Newgale Beach for a different kind of walk.
