Calot Shad Sand

Just north of Berwick-upon-Tweed, this stretch of sand offers proper seaside walking territory without the tourist crush. It's a working beach in the truest sense - you'll see fishing boats and nets, the kind of place that feels more lived-in than picture-postcard pretty.

What you get is space. Lots of it. The sand runs in a generous curve, backed by low dunes and rough grass rather than amusement arcades or beach huts. On a decent day the light's excellent, and on a grey one it's moody enough to feel atmospheric rather than disappointing. Kids can do the usual - paddle, hunt for shells, build whatever they're building - without their parents fussing about staying within sight of a lifeguard station.

Walkers will find it worth a detour. The beach connects into wider coastal paths, so you're not marooned on sand if you fancy a proper ramble. The Berwick Seaview Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite is barely a ten-minute walk away, which makes it convenient if you're basing yourself nearby. The larger Haven Berwick Holiday Centre is under a mile further, both decent enough for a few days.

Timing matters here. Summer weekends can get busy with day-trippers from the Scottish Borders, but midweek or shoulder season it's refreshingly quiet. There's no fancy facilities - bring what you need - but that's rather the point. This is a genuine working beach, not a managed attraction. Honest stuff.
