Callow Hill

Standing at 275 metres above sea level, this modest Staffordshire peak won't leave you gasping for breath, but the views across the surrounding countryside are surprisingly decent for such an unassuming hill. The walk up takes about 20 minutes from the nearest parking spot, following well-worn footpaths through farmland and patches of woodland.

Families with older children will find it manageable - there's nothing too taxing here, though the final approach can get muddy after rain. Dog walkers seem to have claimed this as their territory, so expect plenty of four-legged company on weekend mornings.

What strikes you most is how quiet it feels, despite being just a few miles from Stoke-on-Trent. On clear days you can pick out the Pennines to the north and catch glimpses of the Peak District's southern edges. It's hardly spectacular, but there's something properly restorative about the peace up here.

The summit itself is unmarked - just a gentle grassy dome with a few scattered trees. Worth combining with the nearby Roaches or Hen Cloud if you're after a proper day's walking, but perfectly fine as a gentle leg-stretcher if you're staying at one of the local campsites like Springfields or Hales Hall. Allow an hour for the round trip, longer if you fancy a proper explore of the surrounding bridleways.
